The Idroscalo of Milan was founded as a seaplane floating point at the end of the 1920s, located near the Milan-Linate airport. With the decline of the seaplane as a means of transport, the large water basin is now a hub for recreational and sporting activities.

Already from its first years of life, the Idroscalo of Milan became, in the warm season, a meeting point where to practice sports such as sailing and rowing and became commonly known, along with the Lido of Milan as "the sea of Milan".

Today seaplanes are no longer seen except for sporting demonstrations and this place is a holo for recreational and sporting activities. Here were organized the National Rowing Championships, the European Championships and about ten years ago, for the first time, the World Championships. Triathlon has also chosen this place for many years as an ideal venue for major international competitive events.

The park has an extension of 1.6 km2. The artificial basin is 2,600 meters long, between 250 and 400 meters wide and between 3 and 5 meters deep.

Although it is not included in the municipal territory of Milan, the Idroscalo is, in effect, an important component of Milan’s park system. It is now owned by the metropolitan city of Milan, which has inherited it from the pre-existing province of Milan and in recent years it has been further improved by providing it with a surveillance service and organizing shows of all kinds.
