Il Comitato Internazionale Paralimpico (International Paralympic Committee - IPC) e la International Triathlon Union (ITU) hanno annunciato che ai Giochi Paralimpici di Tokyo 2020 si disputeranno 8 eventi (4 maschili e 4 femminili), due in più rispetto all’edizione di Rio 2016, quella del debutto del paratriathlon ai Giochi. A Tokyo ci saranno dunque 80 atleti al via, 10 per ogni gara che assegna le medaglie.
"Finalmente sono state svelate le carte, l'annuncio delle categorie era molto atteso sia tra gli atleti sia tra i membri dello staff - commenta il Direttore Tecnico del Paratriathlon Mattia Cambi - Quando abbiamo il programma gara, non posso negare che è scappato un bellissimo sorriso sul mio volto: per due anni abbiamo ragionato tatticamente senza alcun riferimento, portando avanti tutte le categorie ove ci fosse un livello di competitività adeguato allo standard internazionale, abbiamo inserito più atleti possibil nei primi 10 posti del ranking mondiale inseguendo punti in giro per il mondo. Ora sono molto felice perchè tutti gli investimenti fatti in questo biennio iniziano a concretizzarsi e ancor di più da oggi possiamo delineare la strada per i prossimi due anni ed inseguire la qualifica a Tokyo 2020 con un gruppo di 6 atleti. Ci siamo prefissati l'obiettivo di qualificarli tutti e sei - prosegue Cambi - è una bella sfida ma, come ho detto sin dall'inizio, sarà molto stimolante per tutto l'ambiente portarla a termine. C'è molto interesse ed entusiasmo attorno al settore paratriathlon che mese dopo mese cresce e diventa più grande e più maturo su molteplici aspetti: i ragazzi lo sentono e credo che questo entusiasmo attorno a tutti loro sia fondamentale d'ora in avanti e fino alla fine di questo ciclo".
