World Triathlon Series: a Montreal, in gara Betto e Fabian

Nel fine settimana, ritorna la World Triathlon Series. Due giorni di gare a Montreal (Can) per la settima tappa del circuito mondiale che assegnerà i titoli iridati a metà settembre in Gold Coast (Aus). In Canada, sabato 25 (donne, ore 13.30 locali, ore 19.30 italiane) e domenica 26 agosto (uomini, ore 13.30 locali, ore 19.30 italiane) ci saranno due azzurri in gara: Alice Betto (G.S.

WTS Montreal Welcomes Elites for Penultimate Race of the Season

MONTREAL - The 2018 World Triathlon Series has reached the seventh stop on the calendar with the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Montreal playing host for the penultimate race of the season. As the second Canadian held race of the year also, the Series is eager to return to the French-Canadian city as it debuted into the WTS family just last year. Elite races are set to take place on Saturday and Sunday, August 25-26, with athletes looking to secure last-minute rankings points before the Grand Final in Gold Coast, Australia next month and the World Championship Title is crowned.Elite Women Preview
After six races in six different cities across the globe, the time has finally come for the penultimate event of the 2018 World Triathlon Series. Continuing the journey in Canada, the season returns for the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Series Montreal race for only the second time, after first debuting on the WTS calendar just last year in 2017. Hosting the fourth Olympic-distance race of the year, the elites will tackle a course that guides them on a tour of the historic streets of the Old Port of Montreal in an effort to gain as many points as possible before the Grand Final in Gold Coast next month.

The women’s season has been an exciting and diverse one as four different women have shared the top of the podium in only six races, two of which won a WTS event for the very first time. Now that there are only two events left in 2018, the tight race for the World Championship title is closer than ever.

Entering Montreal, USA’s Katie Zaferes once again will line up as the Series leader. She currently stands at 4170 points, exactly 591 points ahead of Brit Vicky Holland. Montreal will be a crucial race for the American however as she needs to finish sixth or better in order to increase her points total, which given the fact that Zaferes has yet to claim a WTS gold this season, every point is beneficial. However, winning a race is not necessarily mandatory for earning a World Championship. In 2010, Aussie Emma Moffatt was crowned World Champion despite never winning a race in the regular season, so Zaferes’ consistency of finishing in the top six in every race she has completed could be the strategy to grant her the World Title.

Holland then will be the woman wanting to push Zaferes out of the running this weekend. Currently second in the overall rankings, she needs to finish at least fourth in Montreal with ideally Zaferes not making it in the top six to go into the Grand Final in the Gold Coast as the Series leader. Otherwise, Holland needs to keep her sights on making the podium, with Zaferes finishing at least two spots behind her as another route to becoming the new Leader.

Elite Men Review
Touching down in the second Canadian host city of the season, the 2018 ITU World Triathlon Montreal event welcomes the elites for the penultimate race of the season. Having debuted on the WTS calendar just last year, Montreal is a beautiful and historic city, which makes for an amazing standard-distance, 1.5km swim, 40km bike and 10km run course.

As the last race of the season before the men’s field travels to Australia to compete for the World Championship at the Grand Final, all focus for this Sunday will be on collecting as many points as possible to go towards the overall Series rankings.

After winning his third WTS race of the season in Edmonton, Spaniard Mario Mola has set himself up in a perfect condition to potentially win his third consecutive World Title. As the current Series leader in the rankings, with 4850 points he is untouchable going into Sunday’s race. That means that regardless of where he finishes in Montreal, he will enter the Grand Final in the Gold Coast still in the number one position before he fights to reclaim his WTS Championship crown.

But while Mola can enter Montreal with the slightest of ease, the rest of the men’s field will be battling it out for last chance points to bump up their stakes in the rankings before the final race of the season next month.

One of those men is Aussie Jacob Birtwhistle. While currently ranked third overall, he stands just 565 points behind Frenchman Vincent Luis, who is not racing in Montreal. Finishing well on Sunday would put in reach the possibility of making it onto his first WTS Championship podium. His 2018 season has been an entertaining one as he has showcased his ability to perform under pressure, which has earned him a spot on two WTS podiums and two Mixed Relay Series podiums as well.

ABOUT THE RACE:
When it comes to sports, Montréal plays to win as Canada's first Olympic city. Montréal is a hub for promoting and developing elite sports in Québec and in Canada, hosting more than 60 national and international events in 32 disciplines each year.  In 2016, Montreal debuted for its first time hosting an ITU World Cup event and then in 2017 joined the World Triathlon Series as the 24th city to ever host a race, since the inception of the Series in 2009. It was also the first time that a country had held two races in two different cities in the same season. This year Montreal will be the penultimate race of the season. The venue for the race will be located in the Old Port of Montréal and the swim will take place at the Jacques-Cartier Quay.
