Il Congresso ITU 2019 tenutosi nella "capitale olimpica" Losanna alla presenza di 73 Federazioni affiliate alla famiglia del World Triathlon ha emesso i verdetti sui calendari dell'attività internazionale del prossimo anno: sono stati infatti presentati i nuovi calendari della Coppa del Mondo e del Paratriathlon per il 2020.
Saranno due gli eventi internazionali che l'Italia ospiterà nell'anno Olimpico che ci poterà a Tokyo 2020: confermata la World Cup in Sardegna che dopo le 4 edizioni di Cagliari si sposta ad Arzachena il 30-31 maggio mentre, per la prima volta nella storia del triathlon italiano, è stato assegnato il Mondiale di Paratriathlon a Milano in 2-3 maggio. Nel 2020 avremo così in Italia un mese di maggio all'insegna dell'altissimo livello ottimo viatico verso i Giochi Olimpici e Paralimpici di Tokyo 2020: ricordiamo che i Giochi Olimpici prevedono la gara maschile in 27 luglio, quella femminile il 28 luglio mentre il 31 luglio ci sarà la novità della Mixed Relay; i Giochi Paralimpici, invece, sono in programma il 29-30 agosto.
“Dopo la conferma dei Mondiali di Winter Triathlon ad Asiago nel 2020, arrivano altre due importanti conferme per l'Italia – dichiara il Presidente della Fitri Luigi Bianchi – Milano ospiterà i Campionati del Mondo di Paratriathlon il prossimo anno, una decisione che premia le capacità dimostrate negli anni scorsi nell'organizzazione delle World Paratriathlon Series a Iseo e all'Idroscalo. C'erano altre località importanti candidate, ma le doti e l'affidabilità dimostrate dagli organizzatori hanno rappresentato un'ottima garanzia per l'ITU. Per quanto riguarda la World Cup – prosegue il Presidente – andremo sempre in Sardegna, spostandoci ad Arzachena, a Cannigione per la precisione, in Costa Smeralda. Un contesto magnifico che ospiterà una gara impegnativa, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la frazione ciclistica, mentre il lungomare offrirà una cornice naturalistica bellissima per il nuoto e la frazione di corsa. A margine della Coppa del Mondo ci sarà anche una manifestazione per gli Age Group alla quale spero che partecipino in massa gli appassionati di questa disciplina che potranno gareggiare in uno scenario unico. Purtroppo non vedremo i Campionati Mondiali Multisport a Pesaro nel 2022 – aggiunge Bianchi, commentando la notizia dei giorni scorsi – poiché sono stati assegnati a Ibiza, concorrente agguerrita che aveva già organizzato gli Europei Multisport. Pesaro comunque non è uscita sconfitta, anzi, è stata promossa come città e come organizzazione e la stessa ITU ha invitato a riproporre la candidatura in futuro: ci stiamo pensando, ma sono certo che ci sarà occasione affinché questa location ospiti un grande evento di triathlon”.

Thomas Bach hails bold vision for triathlon during 2019 ITU Congress
Thursday in Lausanne, Switzerland, saw the 2019 ITU Congress held in the Olympic capital, bringing together 73 member Federations to the latest annual gathering of the World Triathlon family. Among the points of business were the announcement of the new World Cup and Paratriathlon calendars for 2020, in-depth reports from the 2019 Tokyo Test Events, a new mentorship programme and the approval of American Samoa as the 172nd member of the International Triathlon Union.
Among the guests were IOC President Thomas Bach, who spoke of his admiration for the modern, values-based thrust of ITU as an organisation under the leadership of Marisol Casado. The ITU President expressed her gratitude for Mr Bach’s commitment and guidance, and for his admiration for the sport of triathlon and its athletes: “The athletes are at the heart of every decision we make as an organisation and their commitment to the sport is incredible, so I am very proud of the support Thomas Bach has shown to ITU,” she said.
The final selection of the company chosen to deliver the ITU mentorship programme was also announced on Thursday. Helmed by Norman Brook, who has worked with Olympic coaches and received an MBE for his services to social development through sport, Brook Sport Consulting will deliver a mentorship programme across all areas of the sport, from coaches to Technical Officials, including a specific focus on women in the sport.
“ITU is maybe the International Federation that has most embraced the Olympic agenda 2020,” said Thomas Bach in his address to Congress. “The IOC is proud of the close cooperation it has with the ITU in respect of good governance as well as gender equality, which is in the interests of every organisation. So I thank Marisol Casado for all she is doing with ITU.”
Julie Duffus from the IOC gave a presentation on sustainability in sport, while IOC Sports Director Kit McConnell also followed Thomas Bach onto the stage to reflect on the success of the Tokyo Test Event and look ahead to next year’s Olympic Games.
The organising committee of the Edmonton 2020 Grand Final gave a preview of their plans as hosts of next year’s World Championships as the triathlon family prepared for three days of racing in the Olympic capital of Lausanne.
